eBay auction vs Buy It Now for sneakers: when a reserve pays

Hold a fixed price for any pair with a clear market price, and for every size run. Auction a single pair only when its price is unclear: a sample, a rare size or a used pair with no comparable listing. Set the reserve at the lowest price you accept, and count the reserve fee as a cost, because eBay charges it whether the pair sells or not.

Fixed price by default, an auction for one uncertain pair

A fixed-price listing does more for a sneaker seller. It can hold several units and size variations, and it can take Best Offer. You can change its price and quantity while it is live. An eBay auction sells one unit, has no size variations and has no Best Offer.

An auction earns its place when the price is unknown. Comparable listings set a price for a common pair in a common size. A player-edition sample or a used grail in a rare size has no such price. There, bidders find the price for you, and the reserve protects your floor.

eBay starting price vs reserve price

The start price is the lowest first bid. The reserve is the lowest price at which the item sells. Bidders see that a reserve exists and whether bids have met it, but not the amount. If no bid meets the reserve, the auction ends without a sale.

You have two ways to protect a floor. Start the auction at your floor with no reserve, and you pay no reserve fee. Or start low to draw bids and set the reserve at your floor, and you pay the reserve fee. Choose the second way only when a low start is worth that fee to you.

On eBay US, you can add or remove a reserve only while the listing has no bids. You can lower it only while no bid has met it and at least 12 hours remain.

The eBay reserve price fee on each site

On the five sites that publish it, eBay charges the reserve price fee whether the item sells or not. The fee differs by site. These are eBay's published rates, checked on 26 October 2026.

eBay siteReserve price feeFee on a 200 reserve
United States7.5% of the reserve, at least $5, at most $250$15.00
United Kingdom4% of the reserve, at most £150. The reserve must be at least £50£8.00
Germany3% of the reserve, at most €150€6.00
France2.6% of the reserve, at least €2.60, at most €130€5.20
Italy2.6% of the reserve, at least €2.60, at most €130€5.20
SpainNo reserve fee on eBay Spain's fee pages. Check the fee preview before you publish-

An unsold auction keeps the fee. Two failed auctions of the same pair cost two fees. If the reserve fails twice, the reserve is above the market, and a fixed price is the better listing.

Add Buy It Now to an auction

A Buy It Now price lets a buyer end the auction at that price. eBay's listing rules set when it stays open. In general, the first bid removes Buy It Now. With a reserve, Buy It Now stays until the bids meet the reserve. In most categories, the Buy It Now price must be at least 30% above the start price.

Set Buy It Now at the price you want, not the price you accept. The reserve holds the price you accept. A buyer who knows the pair then pays your price at once, and the auction finds the price for everyone else.

How RestocksAIO lists an eBay auction

Each eBay row in the Publish window has a format list: Fixed price or Auction. Fixed price is the default. With Auction, the row price is the start price. Reserve (optional) must be above the start price. Buy It Now (optional) must be above the start price and the reserve.

The duration list has 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10 days, and the default is 7 days. eBay decides which durations a category takes, and the app checks this before it publishes. With a reserve, the row shows an estimate of the reserve fee before you publish. The estimate uses the eBay US rule, so on the other sites read the exact fee in eBay's fee preview.

On the Marketplace tab, the row shows "Auction". The app does not change the price or the quantity of a live auction. If nobody wins, eBay lists the item again at a fixed price, and the listing stays linked to its unit.

FAQ

What is the eBay reserve price fee?

It is a fee for a hidden minimum price on an auction, and eBay charges it whether the item sells or not. On 26 October 2026, the US site charged 7.5% of the reserve, at least $5 and at most $250. The UK site charged 4%, at most £150, with a £50 minimum reserve. Germany charged 3%, and France and Italy charged 2.6%.

Should I set a starting price or a reserve?

Start at your floor with no reserve if you want no extra fee. A start price at your floor protects the pair and costs nothing more. A low start price with a reserve lets bidding start lower, but you pay the reserve fee even when the auction fails. Use the reserve only when a low start is worth that fee to you.

Can I auction a size run on eBay?

No. An eBay auction sells one unit and has no size variations. Publish each size as its own auction, or list the size run at a fixed price with variations. In RestocksAIO, a listing with more than one unit cannot be an auction, and the group goes up at a fixed price.
